Short-Term
“I want to see if missions is right for me.”
(About 2 Months-1 Year)
ABWE’s Short-Term track places missionaries on the field for about two months to one year. Short-term missionaries meet a specific, temporary need — teaching, healthcare, construction, or ministry support — while serving alongside an established church-planting team. For many, it is the first step toward discerning a long-term missions calling.
If you’re not sure if long-term missions is right for you or if you’re not able to commit to a career in missions right now, our adult short-term program is for you. This program is designed for those who want to explore or confirm God’s call into full-time missions by spending less than one year with one of our long-term field teams.
Through this experience, you will adapt to a new culture, become a valuable member of a missions team, and see how your gifts can be used on the mission field. While many have gone on to long-term service, all of our adult short-term missionaries have come away with a better understanding of how God can use them to bless others, and we can’t wait to see how God uses you and your unique gifts.
Wherever you are right now, whatever your experience or education level, we provide the training and resources you need to succeed. We’d love to speak with you about how our beliefs and vision align with your passion and how we can work together to reach the world for Christ.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is short-term missions with ABWE?
The Short-Term track runs about two months to one year. If you have less time, ABWE also offers volunteer trips through Launch Point (one week to two months) and internships (one to six months). If you want a longer apprenticeship, the Mid-Term track runs about one to four years.
What kinds of work do short-term missionaries do?
Short-term missionaries serve wherever a field team has a need: evangelism and discipleship support, education, healthcare, construction, information technology, and more. Every role supports the church-planting team on the ground.
Do I need Bible training to serve short-term?
Not usually. Short-term roles have lower training requirements than long-term service. Some ministry roles benefit from formal Bible training, but many field needs call for practical skills — nursing, teaching, or construction — paired with a desire to serve.
How is a short-term assignment funded?
Short-term missionaries raise financial support through their local church and personal network. Costs vary by country and length of stay, and ABWE coaches every missionary through the support-raising process.
Can short-term missions lead to long-term service?
Yes. Many career missionaries started with a short-term assignment. Serving on the field is often the clearest way to test a missions calling, and your ABWE mobilization coach can help you weigh the next step — including the Mid-Term apprenticeship track.
