Ministry Focus

English Language Ministries

Equipping English teachers in ministry with resources and professional development opportunities resulting in excellence in teaching and culturally appropriate outreach.

Why ESL?

Teaching English opens doors to ministry.

A key factor for many people who trust Christ as their savior is experiencing love from Christians. Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) is a great opportunity to demonstrate that love. It can open hearts when we are knowledgeable about our subject when we invest in-class preparation, when we teach well, when we show kindness to our students, and when we pray for them.

Serving as an ESL instructor also makes it possible to enter certain countries that would otherwise be off-limits.

Preparation for Ministry

Proper ESL training gives the teacher confidence and reduces the stress in prepping and teaching. It also builds respect among our students and increases the credibility of the ministry, which then opens even more doors of influence.

Different teaching situations require different training programs. Those who are teaching English in a language institute will need a different level of training than someone who teaches conversational English to his neighbors on an informal basis. But regardless of what level of training you need, the English Language Ministries team at ABWE is available to advise you on a training program that is appropriate for your future ministry assignment.

For more information about levels of training and English teaching competencies go to ESL/EFL Teaching Competencies Guidelines.

We also offer consultations for professional development opportunities for those who wish to increase the knowledge they already have—after all, one characteristic of a good teacher is that they want to improve in what they do.

Whether it is assessing your students, teaching online, using drama in teaching English, or any other specific area of teaching, the English Language Ministries team is here to help you improve.

Who We Are

The English Ministries team consists of seven current and former ABWE missionaries with degrees, training, and experience in the fields of linguistics, English, and English education. We are passionate about enabling English teachers to teach well. Colossians 3:23 exhorts us, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”

Our prayer is that guided by our central ministry focus, we can encourage English teachers.

Is God calling you to use your skills on the mission field?
