The Spiritual Need in Uruguay

Uruguay is the smallest continental South American country in terms of population (about 3.4 million) and second-smallest in terms of land area. Its low-lying rolling hills and many rivers make it a fertile environment for agriculture and renewable energy, providing stable resources but limited opportunity for its people due to its small size.

Uruguay is one of the most socially advanced countries in Latin America, and it is also considered to be the most secular. Church and state have been entirely separated since the early 1900s, and as many as 48% of Uruguayans adhere to no religion (www.worldpopulationreview.com 2023). While Roman Catholicism is the most-practiced religion in the country, just seven percent of the population are evangelical believers. While Uruguay enjoys economic freedom, relative stability, peace, and safety, it also has the second highest suicide rate in the Americas. Uruguay is considered the least-evangelized country in the Americas and is in desperate need of the life-giving hope of the gospel.

ABWE in Uruguay

The first ABWE missionaries to Uruguay opened the field in 2022 and are currently growing a team of church planters who are developing several ministries to share the gospel and plant churches with a passion for missions. These ministry opportunities include family and personal counseling, small group/in home bible studies, community sports outreach, meal distribution, and a community center outreach in marginalized neighborhoods. We have a burden to build deep, meaningful relationships with the Uruguayan people that will result in national workers being trained for full-time ministry, with the ultimate vision of seeing South America grow into a launching pad for worldwide missions.

The people of Uruguay need to know the truth of God’s love and salvation. Will you prayerfully consider joining us so we can reach more Uruguayans for Christ?

We'd love to talk with you about how God is leading you.
