Situational Leadership®

1. Leadership Behavior

Objective: ABWE team leaders will understand the general concepts of leadership and determine individual leadership styles/tendencies of the team members; they will understand four basic styles of leadership and will apply the most appropriate and effective style for particular situations.

• Principles of effective leadership
• Leadership styles
• Telling
• Selling (guiding)
• Participating (coaching)
• Delegating
• Task behavior & relationship behavior
• Evaluation of personal leadership styles (use of leadership inventory)

2. Group Readiness

Objective: ABWE team leaders will understand, appreciate, and use the four levels of follower readiness and will understand the importance of task specific readiness.

• Importance of followers
• Components of readiness: ability and willingness
• Continuum of follower readiness (four levels)
• Task specific readiness

3. Application of Situational Leadership

Objective: ABWE team leaders will be equipped to determine leadership styles, based upon readiness of the task and reaching an agreement with the follower group for a specific style.

• Determining group readiness
• Determining appropriate leadership style
• Communicating effective task statements
• Contracting for leadership style

4. Change

Objective: ABWE team leaders will be prepared to adjust their leadership styles to various and changing environments.

• Continued evaluation of task, leader, and group…in the face of change
• Adjustments to various organizational settings

• Educational institution
• Parachurch boards

5. Team Leadership

Objective: ABWE team leaders will understand the types of leadership needed for various situations and people and will be able to apply this knowledge to the leadership of their teams.

• Application of leadership style to various settings and people
