We have returned from spending two weeks at Field Preparation Seminar at ABWE and it was hugely encouraging. One can hardly drive off the campus without an intense feeling of encouragement and exhortation, ambition and humility, joy and sorrow. We know that as we leave for Russian and are immersed into a different culture and a difficult language, it will be hard but it is inspiring to know that we have a strong, supportive team standing behind us!

I just returned from Field Preparation Seminar (FPS).  Week one was spent in LANCE (Language Acquired Naturally through Cultural Encounters).  During this training, I learned the international phonetic alphabet.  I was able to work one on one with a language helper, which showed me how important it is to learn the context in which language is spoken. Week two was filled with appointments with Pre-Field Ministries, Missionary Finance, the Center for Excellence in International Ministries (CEIM), ABWE's physician, and my regional director.  We also learned methods of chronological Bible teaching, which I was really looking forward to.  It is really amazing to see how each part of the Bible flows together to make one big story of how God has worked throughout history to redeem people of all nations.  Even better was to learn how to teach this cross-culturally.  I feel so prepared for the field after having gone to the Field Preparation Seminar.

Field Preparation Seminars (FPS) occur twice a year, one in April and the other in November.  Each Field Prep Seminar spans about twelve days and is divided into two distinct programs.  The first three days are dedicated to the LANCE (Language Acquired Naturally through Cultural Encounters) workshop, which provides interactive instruction and experience in learning how to learn to speak a second language.  The three days of LANCE include three emphases:

The remainder of the Field Prep Seminar focuses on a variety of other topics that are essential for a successful first term of missionary service.  There are also three emphases in this part of Field Prep Seminar:
