ABWE's Digital & Electronic Presentation Training
Vital Information for ADEPT Module Participants
This ADEPT module is designed to equip you to create and deliver computer-based presentations (e-presentations) using such programs as Adobe Photoshop Elements, Microsoft PowerPoint, and ProShow Gold. In addition, it will orient you to all of the major graphics file formats and their distinctive properties, the process of image scanning and enhancement, principles of visual design, as well as a wide array of digital image resources.
Consequently, it will be a busy, learning-packed course that will require a focused group of learners. Through experience, we have learned that the following issues can “make” or “break” the course.
1. Course Schedule
Please study the following schedule carefully. While you are in the Harrisburg office, it is possible, and maybe even probable, that office personnel and administrators will want to meet with you during the times that course sessions are scheduled. Or, you may be tempted to miss some of the sessions in order to meet with them. If you choose to participate as a trainee in this course, we request that you schedule any personal or business-related meetings during the lunch or dinner hours. We have learned through experience that when just one person misses a short segment of the course, it tends to bog down the entire group as he or she must get caught up with the class in order for group learning to proceed.
If, after previewing the schedule, you think that you will be unable to comply with the course schedule, we would encourage you to plan to participate at a later time when you can give the course the focused attention that is necessary.
Note: The Monday morning session is foundational to the entire course. Please arrange your travel plans in order to be here by 8:30 a.m. on Monday.

Note: The Friday afternoon activities are a vital part of the course. Please make your travel arrangements so that you do not have to leave prior to the 4:00 p.m. dismissal time.
2. Computer Competency
You do not need to be a computer expert to participate in the course, but it is essential that you have a good working knowledge of the Windows operating system. If you have any questions regarding the level of your computer skills as preparation for this module, please contact Ben Barrett (ben@abwe.org).
3. Math Calculator
In the first session, “Welcome to the World of Digital Images,” there will be some simple calculations that will require a pocket or small desktop calculator.
4. Presentations Emphasis
This course will focus on presentation graphics, not on desktop publishing. Although some of the information would be applicable for print applications, the purpose of this course is to train people to create and use computer-based presentations. If desktop publishing applications of computer graphics are what you need, we recommend that you do not enroll in this course.
5. Course Tuition
The course tuition varies with the multiple options for participating in the module. Tuition includes text books, notebook and materials included in it, refreshments, lunch meals, and other expenses associated with the course. Tuition per individual is $300. Prefield is $250 and for a spouse that shares a computer and materials (chooses not to attend as a separate unit) is $100 (5 days) or $150 (7–10 days). This amount is due one month prior to the course and is non-refundable. One month prior to the course, the money will be transferred from the ministry accounts of ABWE personnel who are pre-enrolled in the course. If payment has been received and you are unable to attend the course, payment can be applied to future ADEPT modules. Please contact jwatson@abwe.org for details.
6. No Laptops
Sometimes people ask if they can bring their laptop computers into the class so that they can work on their own computers. That would be counterproductive to the teaching-learning process, since our training room is equipped with computer systems that are specifically equipped with the exact software and hardware (and network connections) needed for the course. Even when a couple is working together in the class, we strongly discourage one spouse from working on a laptop. Experience has taught us that this tends to create a variety of distractions to the teaching-learning process, for the person who would be using the laptop and for others in the class.
7. Adults Only
We are also asked from time to time if teen-aged children can participate in the class with their parents. We have concluded that this would not be a good idea for a variety of reasons. Thus, we only enroll adult missionary participants.
8. Course Project
Throughout the course, you will be working on a PowerPoint or ProShow Gold presentation (1) that will help you to practice what you are learning and (2) that you can use later in your personal ministry. Please bring photos or slides with you that you can scan and use in that presentation. On Friday of the first week, you will be asked to present a “show and tell” presentation to demonstrate what you have accomplished in the development of your presentation up to that point. It will be very beneficial to you to think through the kind of presentation you want to create, prior to the week of the module. The better prepared you are for the development of your presentation, the easier it will be for you to produce it during your time in Harrisburg.
9. ProShow Gold Presentation
If you are signing up for the full two weeks of the module and hope to create a ProShow Gold presentation during that time, it is essential that: (1) you check with Ben Barrett (ben@abwe.org) in advance and (2) you arrive with a written (word for word) script. Due to the time needed to create audio soundtracks, we can only create a couple of soundtracks during an ADEPT module. Thus, it is important for you to inform Ben of your plans prior to the module.
10. Digital Camera
If you have a digital camera, we would encourage you to bring it with you. Some of what you learn in the ADEPT module will help you to understand how to set your digital camera settings for best results.
