ABWE is a Baptist organization.
ABWE adheres to the Baptist distinctives. We believe that God has given His great commission to the local church. Therefore, we serve a specific group of churches as we send missionaries out around the world. We serve alongside of Baptist churches, Bible churches, and non-affiliated churches that would adhere to our doctrinal statement. Learn more about what we believe »
ABWE establishes local churches.
Though our primary goal is to establish local churches, we do this in variety of ways using a variety of methods. We seize opportunities to use medicine, aviation, teaching, compassion ministries, business, administration, and really just about anything to advance the Kingdom of God as we establish local church based bodies of believers.
ABWE wants you to succeed.
It means preparation is involved. Many people ask about educational requirements. Do I need a Bible degree? Do I need a college degree? What classes must I take? We would encourage you to visit the “Education” section below for some thoughts about what you can be doing to prepare. Simply stated, no, you do not need a college degree or even a Bible degree. However, you must be able to articulate the truth of God’s Word efficiently. Your educational requirements will vary depending on the type of ministry you participate in on the field. For example, a maintenance person may not necessarily need a degree, but a doctor, pilot, or teacher certainly would. We do require four college-level Bible classes and can provide these classes for you: The Old Testament Story, The New Testament Story, Methods of Biblical Studies, and Missions Theology.
ABWE serves in many countries.
Will we only be where we are now? No, we are always willing to open new fields as long is there is a team that can go and serve together. Do you need to already know where you will go? No. Many attend Candidate Seminar without a clear understanding of where God wants them to serve. One major focus of the seminar is to work carefully with you and your local church in determining where your gifts, talents, and training can be used to the fullest for God’s glory.
ABWE encourages you to prepare now.
As you prepare for missionary service, ask yourself the following questions:
Education
- What should my major be?
- How much schooling do I need?
- How much Bible is required?
Ministry Experience
- What am I doing now?
- Am I practicing evangelism and discipleship?
- What practical experience could I gain through my local church?
Ministry/Professional Training
- What additional training would benefit me?
- What seminars and conferences does ABWE offer?
- In what areas do I need to grow?
Cultural Preparation
- What cross-cultural experience have I had?
- Have I received cross-cultural training or classes?
- How familiar am I with the language?
Personal
- How much debt do I have and how quickly can it be reduced?
- Is my family supportive?
- How will children be involved?
Maybe you don’t know the answers to all these questions. That’s okay. We can help with many of them… just ASK!
