Expedition Frequently Asked Questions
Who can participate in the Expedition program?
Any teen who meets these qualifications:
- A born again believer in Jesus Christ
- In good standing in a Baptist church and sent by that church
- Approved through the application process of the ABWE Expedition program
- Fifteen years old or entering, at least, into the tenth grade in the upcoming school year; high school graduates can participate through the summer following their graduation
What will I be doing during my Expedition experience?
First, you will participate in a four-day training Boot Camp at the ABWE Training Center in Harrisburg, PA. Then, that time of preparation will be followed by an overseas ministry trip, for ten days, to an ABWE mission field site. The hosting missionary will determine the kinds of ministry activities in which you will be involved. You will partner in ministry with other members of your Expedition team and with veteran ABWE missionaries.
Past teams have been involved in such activities as street evangelism, orphanage work, leading vacation Bible schools, teaching Scripture classes in public schools, and other similar efforts. All teams have participated in group singing and public sharing of personal testimonies.
Where will we stay?
Again, this varies from one field to the next. Generally, most Expedition students stay with the missionaries. Sometimes, the team will stay in rented housing. The facilities will vary, but you will always have access to some level of modern conveniences.
Who will be on my Expedition team?
Most teams are made up of eight high school students from around the United States, as well as one married leadership couple.
What expenses are covered by the support amount listed for each Expedition?
All materials, Boot Camp, airfares from Harrisburg to the field and back to Harrisburg, room and board, entrance and departure fees related to customs and immigration, and travel within the foreign country are all included. Travel expenses from your home to and from Harrisburg, passports, visas, any required or suggested immunizations, personal incidentals, and insurance are not included.
