Europe: Germany
Germany is a beautiful land dotted by picturesque old villages and castles. The geography includes the Alps in the south, rolling hills through the central region, and lowlands and seashore in the north. It is the largest country in Europe after Russia.
Germany looms as a world-class industrial giant, yet produces a surplus in agricultural commodities as well. Self-sufficiency, however, is gained at the cost of spiritual vitality. Though 70% of Germans maintain the state church membership into which they are born, less than 5% of them attend church on a regular basis. Attendance is normally limited to Christmas and Easter, or important social events such as weddings and funerals. Less than 2% of the population is composed of Bible-believing Christians.
Seeing the urgent spiritual need, in 1992. ABWE selected two focal areas, each with a diameter of 200 kilometers, for church planting efforts.
Vellmar/Kassel, the first focal area, is located in the geographic center of the country. God has established a thriving church in each of the two areas, and plans are in place for additional church plants within the target areas.
The second, with the town of Kusel at its center, is located on the western side of Germany near France and Luxembourg.
ABWE's goal in Germany is to establish churches which will become fully operated by German believers as they are equipped through evangelism, discipleship, and leadership training.
Because of the nature of the country and its people, missionaries must demonstrate maximum perseverance and teamwork, willing cultural immersion, and a strong faith in God.
