Deciding Which Camera to Buy: Step by Step by Step
By Jeff Raymond - ABWE Media Department
The myriad of camera options available today can be mind-boggling. Therefore, the question we get most often is “What camera should I buy?” Just like asking which vehicle you should buy, there is no straightforward answer to this question. We do not answer the question by saying “1968 Pontiac LeMans Sport, 4 speed, blue with black interior,” but rather try to give you the tools necessary to make an informed decision based on evaluation of your own photographic needs.
There is a tremendous amount of information on the internet to compare the benefits and weaknesses of various cameras. However, when you’re doing research on the web, especially regarding the Film vs. Digital issue, you need to realize two things:
- Everyone has a bias – Taking time, effort, and money to put information online is not something that is done without purpose. Objective information is not easy to find.
- Online reviews are general, not written for missionaries and their specific needs - Keep in mind frequent travel, harsh climates, indoor photos in large church meetings, and the need for high-quality images for presentations on large screens to large audiences.
This reference guide is designed as a worksheet: a 4-step process to help you think through the issues involved in making a camera purchase decision.
