Cameroon

Since 2005, Fulbe refugees have been driven across the border of Central African Republic (CAR) into Cameroon. Tchadian rebels (jagina’en) have been raiding villages, stealing cattle, and terrorizing the border region between CAR and Cameroon. Children have been kidnapped from Fulbe families and held for large ransoms, because it is assumed that the Fulbe are wealthy because of their cattle. The need in Cameroon is great!

Jane Schmitz
Jane Schmitz is helping a new church plant through a monthly ladies meeting. Many of these ladies are new believers and Jane is visiting each one in their home to better understand their spiritual needs. Jane has stared a training/equipping group in the previous church she was serving. She is helping them know and use their spiritual gifts in ministry. Jane is teaching at a school and many children have made professions of faith and have given testimony to others. The verses they learn are being recited in the evening in their homes and they cam be heard throughout that quarter of the city. Pray for the Odza church plant that will be without their church planting missionary pastor for six months. Pray that the Elig Edzoa church will find a less expensive place to rent for their meetings.

South Africa Collapse

South Africa

With the dramatic re-emergence of South Africa into the world community, cities such as Cape Town and Durban are experiencing population shifts, economic resurgence, and newly-opened doors for church planting.

Bobby and Sara Hile
Bobby and Sara Hile (furlough) are grateful for God’s protection when a wheel fell off their van during a trip in Michigan. The have been informed that the bookkeeper in South Africa had deposited church money to her personal account. She and her husband are meeting with men of their church for counsel and a process of restoration and restitution. Praise the Lord for the Thompsons who are standing in the gap for the Hiles. They will visit ten more churches before retuning to South Africa in August. Pray that they will be fully supported by then.

Ted and Diane Weinberg
The church in Malmesbury held its first service in their new building on Easter Sunday. The multipurpose building at the camp is as far along as the current funds will allow. Ted returned to the US on June 15. Earlier this year Ted helped with the completion of an office building on the ABWE Literacy Mission compound in The Gambia. Ted and Diane’s son-in-law, Joel Anderson, has been told that there is no further treatment available for his cancer. His health continues to decline. The next project for the Weinbergs will be the Wendell Kempton Medical and Ministry Center in Mango, Togo. They are scheduled to leave for Togo in September.

Togo Collapse

Togo

The initiative and industry of the four million people is an asset to the ABWE goal of church planting. ABWE missionaries have found the Togolese people very responsive to the gospel, therefore, they are eager and zealous to open new ministries on their own. Church planters are needed to execute the plan to multiply churches in the urban centers.

Peter and Janice Maybury
Peter and Janice Maybury are grateful for the ministry of Anna Chubb who has been teaching their children over this last school year. She will also teach them through their next school year. Janice has cut back to part-time on learning Anufo for the summer months. She is doing independent studies, but she is not meeting with her language helper four times a week. Please ask God to help her consolidate and use what she has learned so that the fall session will allow her to make the next step in speaking and understanding Anufo. The Mayburys began a weekly Kids Club on June 24. Over the next 50 weeks they will be building a foundation for understanding the gospel. Peter and a national believer are team teaching a Monday Bible study for several unsaved men. Pray that God will raise up the necessary medical staff for the future hospital in Mango.

Gilbert and Marilyn Dickinson
The Kpogandzi church is moving forward and it’s been exciting to see God provide them with a permanent building in the last couple of years. Pastor Caleb is doing a great job leading the ministry. Gib and Caleb will finish teaching through the church constitution in the next few weeks. God has added to their numbers over this term but more importantly, they have seen spiritual maturity in the lives of the believers. It’s a challenge for them to financially support their entire ministry but they are seeing growth in this area as well. Preparation is being made for a departure in July for the Dickinsons’ year of furlough. Pray as they wind down ministries and turn over responsibilities to others before their departure. They have both been heavily involved with the team leadership this past term. Pray for suitable housing for their time on furlough.

Dave and Peggy Pardini
Dave has been giving Good Soil Evangelism introduction and training seminars in two English-speaking churches. Please pray that these trainees will become even more effective in sharing the gospel with others. The Chinese translation of the evangelism and discipleship materials is now complete. They will soon publish a limited number of copies for Hong Kong church leaders and for field testing. The China Baptist Theological College (CBTC) graduated five students from the B.Th. program and two from the M.Div program on June 8. They have accepted three applicants for the fall semester and are hoping for a total of eight new students by the end of July. Please pray that the Lord will direct more people into His service. President Teddy Cheng will be taking his sabbatical this coming school year. Dave will serve as acting president in his stead. Peggy enjoyed leading a women’s Sunday school class this spring at Harmony Baptist Church. She is looking forward to teaching an English class for the 1st and 2nd year students at CBTC this coming school year.

Cheryl Dyck
More than 700 children registered for Dino Detectives in the 6 locations Cheryl helped with VBS. At least 100 children made professions of faith in Christ. The children thoroughly enjoyed the action songs, Bible stories, and prizes that made up this 5 day program. God has provided a doctor for Palawan Baptist Hospital. Dr. Christine Arcala is searching for just the right place to serve as she decides what residency to take up. She will stay until September. Two of the nursing staff who were on surgical leave have been able to return to work. The hospital has a large financial need.

Michael and Li Landoll
Li’s mother passed away in April. Her funeral in Switzerland was a testimony to God’s grace and a good witness to Michael’s mother who is not saved. After many months of waiting and praying, the local government has finally granted the church permission to build a new church and mission center. They are now talking with the bank about buying the new property. They will then begin drawing the final plans and as they pray that God will provide the funds for the new building. The Lord has opened further contact with some of their neighbors and new visitors have been attending church services. The church will offer a children’s camp and a teen camp in July. They will have some kids and teenagers that come from un-churched families and for them it is the first time that they will hear about the Plan of Salvation. They will also have a youth camp August 9 to 14 and then School Camp August 17 to 19. Please pray that God will give the camp staff strength, wisdom, and creativity to communicate the love of God to all these kids and young people.

Spain Collapse

Spain

The present ABWE team centers its efforts in Madrid, Coslada (just outside of Madrid), and Toledo. In each location the Lord has gathered a small nucleus of believers in the process of becoming an independent local church. Plans call for expansion into outlying communities. In Madrid several ABWE missionaries minister at the academy for missionary children. Innovative approaches, such as sports evangelism and weekday classes in crafts, English and music are being blessed of God to broaden the number of contacts for the gospel.

Merry Davey
Merry Davey requests prayer for God’s supply of the right faculty members for the Christian school. They are in need of English, Social Studies, and math teachers as well as an administrative principle. Her church is now holding two services with a total attendance of 140. They have turned in a building proposal to City Hall for a key property. Pray for a favorable ruling. English Camp was held last week at Alameda and then in Torrejón this week. Please pray that God will use these outreach opportunities to open the doors to the people in their neighborhood so that they may share the Gospel of Christ with them. Family camp is scheduled for the first week of August. Merry has responsibility for crafts again this year.

Ukraine Collapse

Ukraine

ABWE’s work in Ukraine is to facilitate a church planting movement throughout Ukraine that is Ukrainian in character and leadership, culminating in a missions movement. We are accomplishing this through leadership training, medical evangelism and partnering with nationals in planting new churches.

Miriam Wheeler
Dr. Miriam Wheeler assisted ABWE colleagues Dave and Penny Winget and the Ukrainian evangelistic team in Kharkov through medical clinics. She spent one day with each of 3 evangelists. The first evangelist hoped that they would visit 7 villages in one day! They did make it to 4 villages but did not get home until 10pm. Miriam has been helping Lonya teach ABWE's new discipleship study "The Way to Joy" to 3 ladies in Kubanka. They are growing in their relationship with the Lord. God has opened a new door of ministry in the village of Shamanovka. They will return there in August to hold an medical outreach clinic. A ministry team from Miriam’s sending church will arrive July 2. They will hold a children's camp July 6-11 then a youth camp July 12-14. Please pray for unsaved campers to come to know Christ as Savior and for the Christians to grow stronger in their faith. Miriam and other missionaries are dealing with the implications of a new law which states that foreigners can only be in the country for 90 days out of 180 days, even if they hold a visa for a longer period of time. The situation is complex and still fluid. Pray for the Lord to direct their steps and to make a way for missionaries to continue to minister in Ukraine full-time.

Tim and Martia Franklin
Tim and Martia Franklin’s church had a couples’ dinner on June 12 commemorating a day in Brazil that could be compared to Valentine’s Day in the US. Sixteen couples and a widow who didn’t want to miss out attended. Several husbands who rarely turn out for a service came with their wives. One of the single ladies held an evangelistic children’s service at her house taking care of the kids whose parents were at the dinner and reaching out to the kids on her street. Tim gave a good message and they had some games. The highlight of the evening came afterwards when the children returned to church to meet up with their parents. Raissa, a bright, happy 7 year old who comes regularly with her family, asked Tim, “How can I be saved?” Tim talked with her and led her to be saved that night. On June 13 the church began a new Saturday outreach to the neighborhood children. Thirty-six children attended. There are three age groups ranging from 4-12. Three ladies from church are taking a Child Evangelism course and are eagerly putting into practice what they are learning. The seminary held a retreat earlier this month. Final exams will take place the week of June 29. Pray for God’s clear direction for those who will graduate in November.

Chile Collapse

Chile

The capital city of Santiago has been the center of ABWE ministries for years. Santiago has a European lifestyle and many large shopping malls can be found in the city. Many nationally pastored churches exist along with a thriving seminary program with three annex ministries. The ABWE Team however is extending ministries to Northern Chile where a team of missionaries serves in the city of Iquique. The team will extend to the south with a ministry to the Mapuche Indians. Adelphos Chile, a national mission board established in 1993 with 140+ missionaries serving in nine countries of the world, contributes to an ongoing national mission’s movement for the glory of God.

Jon and Kim Spink
Jon and Kim Spink are getting settled in their new home and schedule. The children are making friends, enjoying the nearby playgrounds, discovering foods that they like, and getting into a school schedule. They are sleeping on mattresses until their shipping container can be sent. Kim, Kelly and Katie will begin helping with teaching the children on Sunday mornings. Kelly and Kim look forward to participating in the music ministry on the piano in the future. They were able to visit and meet two of their neighbors last week. They took blueberry muffins to them and introduced themselves.

Dave and Ruth Ann Rogers
Ruth Ann was able to travel to the US for her mother’s funeral. Dave was already in the US speaking at churches and visiting colleges with their daughter, Melissa. They are now all back in Chile. On the last Sunday of May their Church took a love offering for the building project. Their first priority is to get the building sealed off from outside weather and risks. Pray for the funds to make this possible. The church has some outreach ministry planned for their winter break time (July). The Ladies ministry has two Bible studies that Ruth Ann and Linda Cross are teaching. A small church in a rural area of Chile has downloaded Dave’s sermons from the church web site and used them to teach their adults. A church plant in Santiago led by a national Chilean missionary, has needed encouragement and assistance. The Rogers’s church has sent groups to help on two Sundays. Now this missionary pastor (Abelardo Munoz) has been diagnosed with throat cancer. The church is attempting to serve and be a help where possible.

Peru Collapse

Peru

Four cities in Peru serve as the centers for outreach to Peru’s vast population areas. (1)The Amazon River basin presents a jungle style of ministry including launch ministries to river villages and an urban style of ministry in Iquitos where the first missionaries arrived in 1939. Both in the city and along the river, opportunities exist to partner with and train nationals. (2) The coastal city of Chiclayo presents the challenge from upper class ministry and the use of an airplane to reach the mountainous areas. (3) The capital city of Lima has a variety of ministry opportunities described on their web page. (4) Arequipa provides a quaint historical setting for ministry with national partners.

A new tract has been written by a national believer. It introduces the gospel in a clear way and invites the reader to order a free book explaining more about Jesus.

Larry and Jacqui Armstrong
Larry and Jacqui Armstrong (missionaries–at–large) have been able to visit friends and supporting churches in Maryland and Ohio. Larry has been helping Faith Baptist Church in Salem, Oregon, who is without a pastor. The Armstrongs have been given a retired missionary’s library which they will pick up in Michigan and ship to the Philippines. They will also visit supporting churches in Indiana and Illinois.

Marilyn Scraver
Marilyn Scraver has organized a webinar on July 9 to inform parents of Alpha Omega’s online curriculum as an option for missionary families that are homeschooling their children. Chris has been involved in a neighborhood Bible study with Marilyn. She has been very positive about the lessons. Also pray for Pam and Judy who are attending another study.
