Togo

The initiative and industry of the four million people is an asset to the ABWE goal of church planting. ABWE missionaries have found the Togolese people very responsive to the gospel, therefore, they are eager and zealous to open new ministries on their own. Church planters are needed to execute the plan to multiply churches in the urban centers.

Sharon Rahilly
Sharon Rahilly was able to attend a three day church conference for over 1000 believers. It was held on the grounds of a public school. Sharon writes, “What a joy to realize that God is building His church here in Togo – there are approximately 80 churches and church plants in this country just associated with our mission!” Before beginning her furlough ministry next month, Sharon hopes to select two more villages for the Community Health Evangelism ministry. Money has been donated for the purchase of a vehicle for this ministry. Pray that they could find the right one in their price range.

Portugal

Building on the success of the past 20 years, the Portugal team has developed a new church planting strategy, called the "Portugal 4x4 Plan." The goal is to enlarge the base of first generation churches to 16 by the year 2016. These 16 churches will become the foundation for a national church planting movement in Portugal.

Carolee Graf
At the ministry of the Amazon Baptist Hospital the gospel has been explained 586 times this year and 50 women have made salvation decisions. Carolee is teaching a discipleship class for twelve ladies. Others who have received training are now independently meeting for their Bible studies. She is also working with the teen group this year.

Chip and Laurie Phillips
Construction is underway for the new Sunday School rooms. Chip had to assume the role of foreman since a suitable person has not been found locally. The mayor of their city has contracted the Amazon Baptist Hospital to run the county prenatal program. This contract will cover basic expenses and allow the hospital to use their regular donations for ministry and outreach. Training has begun for a Community Health Evangelism program which will be used as an outreach into their county.

Michael Loftis
ABWE has responded to the current economic downturn by reducing the salary of the executive team by 10%, along with other measures. There are many evidences of God’s goodness in spite of a difficult economy. The board recently approved 30 career candidates. The Field Prep Seminar in March was attended by 26 career missionaries who told amazing stories of the sacrificial gifts that have brought them to the threshold of departure for the field. ABWE giving for January and February of 2009 is at 98% of the 2008 giving for the same two months. “Pray with us for the need to raise up new committed support for the home office team.” (from the ABWE Global Team Update, March 25)

Jim and Jan Ruff
Jim has submitted his doctoral dissertation this month and if all goes well he will graduate on May 8. Jan along with several other home office staff had to be let-go due to the effects of the economic downturn. Please pray for the physical needs of Bill Commons and Marlea Pfeiffer.
