Dr. Richard E. Tice with the Lord

February 6, 2006

Dr. Richard E. Tice, former ABWE missionary to Chile, died at home in Westminster, Colorado on Thursday morning, February 2, 2006.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Laurada (Larrie) and children, Timothy, Karis (Kay) Holsne and Candice (Candie) Perkins, as well as eight grandchildren.

Prior to joining ABWE, Dick served as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. He attended Westmont College and graduated from Multnomah Bible College. After marrying Larrie, who had already been serving in Peru with ABWE, he graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary. Dick and Larrie were accepted and appointed to the field of Chile in October, 1956, and served with ABWE until 1976. Dick served as a church planter for two terms; in their third term, he taught at the Bible Institute in Santiago. After they returned to the US, Dick taught missions first at Western Baptist Bible College and then at Denver Baptist Bible College, which merged with Faith Baptist Bible College. During his teaching career, Dick earned his doctorate in cross-cultural Christianity from Denver Baptist Seminary. He also served in local church pastorates in Colorado and New York.

One of Dick’s missionary colleagues states: “He was a gifted missionary, a caring pastor, an experienced professor, and a wonderful person. He was especially gifted in the knowledge of theology. His passion was preaching the grace of God. After retiring he served faithfully in his home church, Fairview Baptist, in Westminster, Colorado. Dick always seemed to find opportunities to witness for Christ. In fact, he led a nurse to the Lord during his last stay in the hospital.  Just a few days before going home to heaven, he wanted to spend the time talking with us about various things in God’s Word.  (Dale and Martha Payne, appointed in the same Candidate Class to Brazil).”

Dick pastored the Brooklyn Baptist Church in New York from 1989-1994. There he instituted an outreach to the Spanish community. He spearheaded a Friday night family ministry that helped expand the church’s international outreach. Dick developed the concept that their church would act as a mother church for new churches in the five boroughs of New York City. One of the members lovingly shares: “His ministry heightened my interest in and love for missions. God used him in many ways to bless all of us who had the joy of serving with him and Larrie.” (Dr. Christopher Nicholas, ABWE board member).

The memorial service will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, February 7th, in the South Holly Baptist Church, 7101 S. Holly Street of  Centennial (Littleton), Colorado.
