Obeying God Together
Nine young people who live at Naro Moru Baptist Children’s Home were recently baptized. They attend Naro Moru Baptist Church, and were saved at different times and at different places, but after learning about baptism, they wanted to obey God together.
These young followers of God are busy serving in their church. Kennedy often leads singing and makes announcements. Dorcus and Peris lead choruses in Kenyan style--the girls sing the verses, and the congregation sings the chorus. They also help the younger children when they all sing as a group.
Many different situations have led these young people to the Naro Moru Baptist Children’s Home. Most of them are orphans. Some have been abandoned, or their parents cannot care for them.
For example, George (whose picture is shown here) and his younger brother and sister were abandoned by their mother. He and his siblings were picked up by the police and put in a juvenile jail. From there they were taken to the children’s home.
Dorcus, Mary, and their cousin were brought to the home by their grandmother who loved them but could no longer care for them. Their mothers are dead, and their grandmother earned only a small living by caring for goats.
Shamza is an orphan who has suffered much abuse. She was saved at a Holiday Bible Club in December.
Peris’ mother is dying of AIDS.
The others have similar stories.
On this memorable day, the river was swollen from the rainy season and full of cold water flowing from snow capped Mount Kenya. The excitement and joy of the young people was evident as they walked down to the river. Pastor Henry Imana baptized them with the assistance of the director of the children’s home. Some of the children could not swim, so they were frightened knowing their faces would be underwater. Still, they wanted to obey.
