More Than Just Health Care

Missionaries in Brazil have restructured their philosophy of medical outreach in Amazonas. The Amazonas Baptist Hospital is poised for greater and wider impact by providing services that the government-run hospital does not offer, such as AIDS testing, dental care, and simple eye surgery. There are plans to take doctors by plane to outlying villages where there are no clinics and where churches are being started.

Dr. Mark and Donna Thompson have moved to Tonantins where they will be working with the congregation of Faith Baptist church, and Mark will be helping in the newly opened government clinic.

Mark will have freedom to speak of Christ as he wishes and to make contacts, evangelize, and disciple for the church. And since he will be working for the state health care system, they are supporting the overhead costs for him to witness and make disciples in the city in cooperation with the church.

As typical in the interior Amazon towns, medical help is very short-handed and the help given by ABWE missionaries is welcomed by the community. The good relationships built open many hearts to hearing the gospel.

Faith Baptist's congregation has been held together by lay leadership with no formal Bible training. They are excited to have Mark and Donna help in the Sunday school and preaching services.

Please pray that Mark, Donna, Jessie (10), and Janell (8) will make a good adjustment to their new location and that God will give them good friendships and blessings in this ministry.
