Every year millions of Africans die needlessly from preventable and treatable illnesses. That’s why for more than two decades ABWE has worked in the country of Togo, West Africa, addressing the medical and spiritual needs of some of the world’s poorest people.

“I’ve become convinced of the enormous contribution that Christian evangelism makes in Africa; sharply distinct from the work of secular NGOs, government projects, and international aid efforts. These alone will not do. Education and training alone will not do. In Africa, Christianity changes people’s hearts. It brings a spiritual transformation. The rebirth is real. The change is good.”

-Matthew Parris, self-proclaimed atheist, reporter for The Times, London

But we believe more can be done.

The city of Mango sits nearly 250-miles north of ABWE’s current medical ministry, in a remote, dry, and impoverished portion of Togo. Many have died there from lack of access to simple medical care. Many more have never heard the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Soon, that could all change.

Modeled after ABWE’s current facility, the Wendell Kempton Medical and Ministry Center will provide life-saving health care and, more importantly, present the Gospel to thousands of patients in this Muslim region of the world.

We believe that Christ will multiply the seeds planted through this unprecedented ministry opportunity, and further His Kingdom.

How can we be sure?

Each year, ABWE has seen more than 2,000 people come to Christ as a direct result of our current medical ministry. Click here for some of their stories. Additionally, approximately 40 churches established in Togo can be traced directly back to our current hospital. We anticipate a similar, if not larger, response from the Wendell Kempton Medical and Ministry Center—which is strategically located near the borders of Benin, Burkina Faso, and Ghana.

For Such a Time as This

Once complete, the Wendell Kempton Medical and Ministry Center will bring quality medical care, compassion, and the Gospel to an area of the 10/40 Window, where such things are desperately lacking. This project will also include:

Renderings of the Hospital

  • A 43-bed surgical hospital
  • Outpatient clinic
  • Culturally appropriate patient/family facilities
  • Community health training
  • Community development programs (e.g., water drilling, education enrichment and microenterprise development)
  • Youth programs

Every patient at the Wendell Kempton Medical and Ministry Center will hear God’s message of salvation and love, many for the first time. We know that this news may change their lives forever.

ABWE Online Giving Wendell Kempton Medical and Ministry Center

The cost to complete the Wendell Kempton Medical and Ministry Center is $5.5 million. Already we’ve received numerous gifts from generous individuals who believe, like us, in the positive changes this hospital will bring to the people of West Africa.

Currently, ABWE needs less than $600,000 to complete this life-saving hospital and ministry center.

We are looking for churches and individuals who will join us in ushering in a new era of hope and healing to the people of Mango, Togo, and beyond.

Will you join us in supporting this unprecedented opportunity to provide hope and healing to those who so desperately need it?

The Wendell Kempton Medical and Ministry Center prayer ministry exists to encourage committed believers to pray for this project, as well as to report on how the Lord is answering those prayers.

There are two distinct focuses for the prayer ministry. The first focus centered on those helping with the project (i.e., the steering committee, ABWE personnel, partnering churches, partnering individuals, or nationals in Togo associated with the project). The focus is on the city of Mango; its governing officials, tribal leaders and people who will have the need for humanitarian and medical attention—these people will also have an opportunity to hear the Gospel.

General Prayer Requests

  • Praise the Lord for a good meeting of an association of churches in Idaho in which the  project was presented.
  • Pray for the pastoral/leadership development of a Togolese man named Felix.  The goal of any missionary is to work themselves out of a job and see nationals take on church leadership.
  • Pray for impact through the Bible study that Mango missionary Esther Neufeld leads to Togolese women.
  • Praise the Lord that a Togolese worker’s, Nanié, life was spared in a terrible accident involving the project’s dump truck.  Be praying for wisdom and money to replace the dump truck as the project is in great need of moving sand and gravel.
  • Pray for good fellowship, rejuvenation, and planning during a West Africa field meeting taking place in The Gambia during the month of April for ABWE missionaries.
  • Cultural Prayer Point: Mango area Islam is not “Middle Eastern” in conformity.  Many northern Togo Muslims listen to Christian radio and are open to Christianity.

In a remote part of a developing country, where some of the hottest temperatures on the globe occur, you can understand why it’s difficult to do much of anything. Yet, it’s in this extreme environment that we’re building the new Wendell Kempton Medical and Ministry Center. The magnitude and difficulty level of this project requires a huge team effort. That we why are extremely thankful that we are not alone.

In spite of the obvious difficulties and hardships, people are stepping up to be a part of this endeavor and lend a hand. But there is still much work to be done. Openings for career and short-term service are still available. But be warned. You won’t come back the same person! To use your gifting in the great task of evangelism and church planting or lend a hand on the construction project contact .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or call (717) 901-6911.
