Dentistry, Doctoring, Discipling

Thailand
by Annie Langston

Picture for a moment, 140 pairs of shoes piled up outside the door—sandals, flip-flops, tennis-in all shades of blue, green, orange, and red. Now come inside the room, and thrill to the scene of 140 children with their eyes glued on the white man standing in front of them with a big smile on his face. Or better yet, imagine you are the white man looking into the faces of these precious children. Dr. Jerry Evans must have had many thoughts going through his mind that morning in the makeshift waiting room of a small cement building. One thought was probably how he and the team were going to check the teeth of all these kids in one short morning. Perhaps foremost on his mind was gratitude to God for allowing him the privilege, along with his team, to be here in Thailand helping the Akha tribal people, medically and spiritually through dentistry, doctoring, and discipling.

From January 21-31, a unique partnership was at work in the mountains outside Chiangrai, in northern Thailand. Calvary Church in Fruitport, Michigan, sent 16 volunteers to conduct a medical outreach clinic among the poor Akha and Lahu tribal people. Consisting of both medical and non-medical people, the team partnered with Pastor Kiatisak of Grace Baptist Church of Bangkok, and Global Access Partners (GAP)/ABWE, to make an impact both physically and spiritually among the Akha and Lahu tribal people.

Hundreds of people were given not only medical help and medicines, but all of them heard the gospel as well. Those who made decisions for the Lord will be followed up by pastors in the 16 Akha churches scattered throughout the mountainsides.

Pray that the seeds of love and the truth of God’s Word sown during these 10 days will bear much fruit for God’s kingdom. Pray also that the trip made by the team will challenge not only those members, but others as well, to seriously consider the part God has for them in mission ministries.

Finally, pray how you could be used by God to partner with a lost people group in this world.
