Chile Accident
April 21, 2006
On April 6, ABWE missionaries Scott Russell and Doug Kreeger were riding a bus to southern Chile with two of their national friends from San Bernardo Church where Doug serves as a missionary pastor. At 5:20 a.m., the bus went off the road at the entrance of a bridge and plunged downward, landing in the middle of a river. This accident has made national headlines and news in Santiago.
Scott, who suffered minor injuries, pulled Doug from the bus. God spared Doug’s life, but he suffered multiple injuries including a punctured lung due to several broken ribs. David Berrios, a friend and brother from San Bernardo Church, was not injured. Three people were killed including the other Chilean brother from San Bernardo Church, Marcos Huachapan. Marcos was a husband to Roxana and a father of two small children. Please uphold this family in prayer.
Scott and Doug are both home from the hospital and are thanking God for His protection. It was an emotional moment when Scott reunited with his wife, Nikki, and their family at the airport after the accident. God provided funds for Doug and Sharon’s daughters, Carol and Kim, to visit their parents in Santiago.
ABWE is very grateful for the assistance that several missionary families from the Bible Baptist Mission are giving to those affected by this accident. Other brethren from churches in the region have also stepped up to help, and a brother from Santiago, Hugo Zuniga, traveled to lend a hand.
While there are grief and concerns associated with this accident, we can certainly say that the testimony of God's people couldn't be better! May the name of Christ be praised in the midst of this tragedy.
