Lamatou is a Muslim woman in Mango, Togo, who is in prison for stealing. ABWE missionaries have been visiting her and working through the book “All the Prophets Have Spoken.” Here is what Lamatou wrote to missionaries recently:
“I don’t remember the exact date, but I know that I started to love Him when I read the gospels. I knew then that I needed Him. When I read Pilgrim’s Progress I knew I needed Him to take away my burden of sin. And then one day, I was kneeling over there in the corner and I prayed to Him, ‘Jesus, I don’t know You, but I want to know You. I need You to take my burden of sin. I believe in You and I give You my life.’
“When I first came to prison, when I was a Muslim, even though you and Becky had your Bible study with me, I prayed every day in my room like a Muslim prays. But after that day, when I knelt in the corner and prayed to Jesus, I didn’t pray like a Muslim anymore. Now I pray to Jesus and I will never go back to the Imam (Muslim religious leader) when I get out of prison. I also used to consult a fetisher [someone who practices animism—a belief in spirits] with some of my friends at work, but I realized that this is also wrong.
“It has not been easy being in prison, but I know that I didn’t come to prison just because of stealing. God brought me to prison so that I could know Him and understand the way to eternal life. I know that God is the one who brought you and Becky here to teach me His Word. If you had not come, then I would still be in the darkness. And now, even if I am not liberated for a long time, I have found the Truth.”
A song written by Lamatou
The God of my Deliverance
I will lift up my eyes to the hills from whence comes my help
My help comes from the Lord who made Heaven and earth.
My parents have abandoned me
My friends have abandoned me
But You God, You know my suffering and You are with me
You are my deliverer
You know me and You are the God of love
He who comes to You finds peace
He who comes to You finds joy
You are the God of my Deliverance
