Ensuring the safety and protection of children is a high priority at ABWE. In fact, in 2006, ministry leadership helped in a multi-agency effort to develop the Child Safety and Protection Network, which now resources more than 40 organizations in best practices for child safety.
In November 2010, the ABWE board adopted a comprehensive child protection policy based on input from industry experts. This policy provides a procedural blueprint for appropriate systems of abuse prevention and response.
ABWE is currently conducting a review of personnel records spanning the 84-year history of our ministry. This past spring, the review process was accelerated because of expressed concerns about the tragic child abuse by former missionary Donn Ketcham. We are currently pursuing any other incidents that were not handled in a manner consistent with current best practices (now codified in our corporate procedures) to ensure that the proper action is taken, if necessary.
It is ABWE’s firm belief that the Policy and Manual for Child Protection will aid in preventing future incidents and is a valuable tool for implementing reliable guidelines and strategies, when appropriate, as we continue God's work around the world.
