Mexico —
It started out on Wednesday as the media reporting a late-season flu—nothing to worry about. Soon, however, the news reported that there would be no school on Friday. Then, throughout Friday more public events were canceled.
The gravity of the situation became more real as church services were canceled on Sunday. Even soccer games, which are revered in Mexico, were canceled. Saturday April 25, all public events were suspended indefinitely and schools have now been canceled until May 6th. At the moment, there is talk of shutting down all public transit.
“We and our ABWE team in Mexico are well and to our knowledge have had no contact with anyone who has been infected with the swine flu strain at the center of the potential pandemic,” says Ron Allen, ABWE missionary in Mexico City.
ABWE missionaries are scheduled to host a group of volunteers this week, and have not canceled that trip, he added. Due to health concerns, however, some ministry opportunities originally planned for the group have been canceled.
In the meantime, “The streets are quieter and surgical masks are a common sight as we venture from our homes,” Allen says. “We continue to take things a day at a time, being vigilant not to do things that would expose us to unnecessary risk.”
During this time, Allen has been encouraged to pray Psalm 91, “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty”.
