One Life to LiveBrenda Mastin

Togo —

Isabel has HIV and is a young mother of a child who is also HIV positive. She represents thousands of women in Togo, like herself, who battle this destructive disease. Additionally, her husband has three wives and lives two hours away from her village.

Recently, Isabel received permission from her husband and his brother to seek treatment at the “white man’s” hospital. But not before trying fetish ceremonies that included cutting open her abdomen and pouring in herbs, sacrificing a chicken, and calling on her ancestors for help. Her story is not without despair, but it is not without hope either.

God led Isabel to ABWE’s Karolyn Kempton Memorial Hospital so that she could hear the gospel. As we shared with her, the light of the gospel shone in her heart and she asked Christ to be her Savior and Lord. Isabel now understands that she has eternal life, even if not much of her physical life is left.
