Dear ABWE Directors: From time to time I stop by and take a quick look at the ABWE webpage. Recently I noticed the material written about Dr. Wendell Kempton, and it brought me some good memories about him and my teachers from the Berean Baptist Seminary in Natal, Brazil.
I recall that when I was a student at the Seminary in Natal, Dr. Kempton paid us a visit (1971 or 1972). Rev. William P. Branda was our director and he told us about the upcoming visit by the ABWE president. We, the students, were a little concerned about how we would communicate with this “president.” In those days Brazil was under a military government and a “president” gave us a picture of someone who would stare us down into nothingness . . . We were all young, and most of us did not have a Christian upbringing.
Well, President Kempton surprised us all. He spoke no Portuguese and we spoke no English. He and his beautiful wife, however, had this welcoming smile that communicated love and care better than any language could. Our meeting was brief, but the impression they left has been a long one.
May God continue blessing his family and those missionaries to whom we (Brazilians) owe so much.
