As Christians, we are called to be good stewards of our money. But what exactly is stewardship? And how can we be good at it?
Stewardship means that you take good care of the money that God has given you. You may be thinking, “But I don’t have much money.” No matter how much or how little money you have, God asks you to take care of it.
As a steward, we are asked to acknowledge that “our” money is actually God’s money. Sometimes that means giving away a portion of it to help take care of His people. It could mean giving up a new toy and donating the money to a church, missionary, or charitable organization instead.
I believe in this so strongly that I made it a priority to teach my own three children how to practice good stewardship when they were young. We set up a system in our house that when my children received money they had to save half of it and give 10 percent of it away. Then they could use the 40 percent that was left for whatever they wanted. That means that if they received 10 dollars, they had to save five dollars and they had to give one dollar away. Then they could spend the other four dollars. I was always very blessed when they gave more than 10 percent away to others. My children learned how to be good stewards of God’s money at an early age, and God has blessed them over the years for their obedience to Him.
So, what can you do to be a good steward? The mission field is just one of the places where God asks us to invest some of our resources. Right now at ABWE, we have created a “Care for the Children” fund. Money from this fund helps children from around the world to receive medical care, education, and the gospel of Jesus Christ.
