Hope in HaitiJim Cook

When we landed in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, it was scorching hot. Little did we know that there was a hurricane in the area. That night the winds blew, but there was very little damage.

The next day when we went to tour some Haitian schools and make plans for our Good Soil training for the Haitian school teachers, we discovered that at one school no children came. Not one! Fear of another natural disaster was evident.

When we toured the empty school, we saw tents dotting the yard outside. We discovered that some classes were held in tents because parents were afraid that the school would collapse in another earthquake and they would lose their children.

Fear is prevalent in Haiti. But so is the gospel! Many children are hearing of Jesus Christ and are responding to the Good News that Jesus Christ died and rose for them. While we were there, we had the opportunity to share with children about the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made on the cross, and these Haitian children were so responsive. Despite fear, God is bringing hope to the children of Haiti!

Let me tell you a brief story of another way God is bringing that hope to the children of Haiti.

Several months ago God directed me to a man who could get well-balanced meals into Haiti for about 25 cents a meal. God had also directed me to an anonymous donor who wanted to match every dollar that ABWE gave for meals for orphans in Haiti.

ABWE’s Care for the Children Fund released $5,000 for this purpose, and then the anonymous donor doubled the gift. We were thrilled at the idea that $10,000 would provide 40,000 meals for these kids.

But it gets better! After I came out of our Care for the Children commitee meeting, I received a call from the donor. He told me that if we would give $10,000, he would send 100,000 meals for these orphans. He also offered to pay for the shipping. That same night, I talked to an ABWE missionary who had been in Haiti two weeks before. He told me that the very orphanages we were planning to help were down to their last meal. One more day and the kids had NO food . . . none!

Only 24 hours earlier we thought we were getting 40,000 meals to these orphans. However, God soon provided 100,000 meals for these children, who were down to their last meal. The kids will also hear the Good News of our Lord Jesus, and it is our prayer that many will come to Christ.
