Since I am relatively new to the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism (ABWE), I am still constantly amazed at the scope of ABWE’s ministry. Just when I think that I have grasped what this mission agency does, I find myself exclaiming, “We do THAT too?” From aviation to hospitals, publishing, education, and sports ministries, God has certainly diversified the way He uses ABWE to plant churches and reach His people. In this issue, we’ve looked at some of ABWE’s unique ministries in Asia and the Far East.
Despite intense persecution and efforts to restrict the gospel in many countries in this region, Christ’s church is growing at an incredible rate. ABWE President Dr. Michael Loftis addresses the implications of this trend in his column, while Dr. Bill Commons discusses the importance of evangelism in restricted-access nations in “Behind Closed Doors.” An Indian pastor writes of his first-hand experience with persecution after he visited with Christians whose villages were mobbed and burned by religious extremists. In this issue you also can read “No Place to Call Home,” a story of how one ABWE missionary is successfully reaching out to a unique group of young men who have been deported from the United States to Cambodia. In “The Front Lines of Battle” learn how one missionary family in Papua New Guinea is not only addressing the physical needs of tribal warriors, but their spiritual needs as well.
I hope that you find this issue of the Message informative and encouraging as it highlights a handful of ABWE ministries that God is using to spread the gospel in Asia and beyond.
