Missionaries Assist During Energy Conflict
Many Eastern Europeans went to bed freezing after a disagreement over pricing prompted Russia to cut off a major natural gas supply. ABWE missionaries stepped in to help many elderly and disabled who went to bed freezing; temperatures in some areas measured -5 degrees or lower. Sensing a desperate need, ABWE missionaries pooled their money, purchased small electric heaters, and distributed them to the families of children from their local outreach program. Missionaries also distributed sleeping bags. scarves, hats, and gloves they received from two churches in the United States. Pray for the Church in Eastern Europe and for those who do not have even the basic luxury of a reliable heat source. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
Costa Rica Quake Can’t Shake Outreach
On the afternoon of January 8, an earthquake with several aftershocks struck 20 miles north of Costa Rica’s capital city, San Jose’. The quake registered 6.1 on the Richter scale, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Landslides further intensified damage, trapped hundreds, and killed at least 20 people. All ABWE personnel are accounted for and unharmed, and they have not experienced damage to any of their properties. ABWE missionary Ryan Rought has extensive military training in rappelling and helicopter missions, and he was requested by the government to assist in the rescue efforts. After several days of delays, his orders were to go by truck to the furthest point possible, and then hike into the mountains in search of victims buried under collapsed homes and landslides. Please pray for Costa Rica as the country recovers from this devastating disaster. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
ABWE Hosts Fall Student Missions Forum
During the fall break students from Cedarville University, Baptist Bible College, Davis College, and Liberty University together for a weekend of missions encouragement and challenge, as some investigated God’s heart for the world for the first time and others looked for an agency to connect with in their pursuit of career missions.
Students were given an in-depth look at ABWE’s worldwide ministry and were challenged in many areas: their personal growth, finances, relationships, prefield ministry, missionary care, mobilizing others, and long-term commitment. Students had the opportunity to interact with ABWE’s home office personnel, regional administrators, retired missionaries, and ABWE President Dr. Michael Loftis.
