Haiti —
In response to the earthquake that devastated Port-Au Prince, Haiti, on January 12, 2010, the ABWE Haiti Relief team has begun connecting with organizations currently on the ground, in order to get supplies to the people quickly.
ABWE has allocated $5,000 to help orphans in Haiti through its “Care for the Children Fund.” Since the quake, Haitian orphanage “My Father’s House” has been inundated with new orphans. The staff is trying to expand into two nearby buildings, which were not destroyed in the quake, to accommodate these children.
Additionally, ABWE doctor, John Briggs, has recently departed for the Dominican Republic along with a businessman and emergency room nurse technician. They will be providing much needed medical care at two hospitals and an orphanage over the next two weeks. They will also be delivering funds to purchase and distribute medical supplies and water.
ABWE will soon allocate more funds to provide immediate assistance in the areas of medical care and humanitarian aid. In addition, relief funds will be directed toward second-tier medical and reconstruction assistance in the weeks and months to come. Past disasters, such as the 2004 Asian Tsunami, have demonstrated that this long-term approach results in continuing ministry long after the media attention is gone. Our desire is achieve the same long-term results in Haiti.
