A massive 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti near the capital of Port-au-Prince on Tuesday, January 12, 2010. The quake, which struck about 15 km (10 miles) south-west of Port-au-Prince, was quickly followed by two strong aftershocks of 5.9 and 5.5 magnitude.
The International Red Cross says up to three million people have been affected. That is one third of the tiny nation’s estimated population. Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere and has suffered a number of recent disasters, including four hurricanes and storms in 2008 that killed hundreds.
While ABWE has no missionaries in Haiti, we are making contact with Haitian churches and partners in order to provide critical assistance at this time. ABWE efforts will focus on initial relief and ongoing re-construction in the most affected areas. In other disasters, we have found that our efforts to enhance the spread of the Gospel was especially important to churches and other religious entities who are less likely to receive help from traditional secular and government sources.
Please pray for those who have been affected by the unimaginable damage and overwhelming suffering that is perhaps only beginning. Pray that God would intercede through His people to provide the much needed basic necessities as well as the peace and comfort that can only be experienced through Jesus Christ.

Please Note: The U.S. Senate recently passed a bill that lets taxpayers claim deduction on their 2009 returns for donations made before the end of February 2010 to Haiti earthquake relief efforts. (Only taxpayers who itemize will be able to claim a deduction for charitable giving).
